SHIELDS

SHIELDS - Rothesay, Bute, Buteshire

My Shields branch of the family originates in Ireland when John Shields was born about 1841 in Donegal to a John Shields and Marjorie McDiarmid.

I'm unsure what brought him to Rothesay but it was here in 1860 that he married Isabella Slavine from Letterkenny Donegal.

Isabella's family came to Rothesay around 1851 when her older brother married a Glasgow girl and setup home in Rothesay.

BUTEMAN REPORT - Yesterday morning, about 10.30, when the steamer Grenadier was about to leave the pier, a well-known coal agent, Norman Graham, was standing at the gangway talking to a friend. It is assumed that he had been leaning on the gangway and had not noticed that it had been withdrawn, with the result that he over balanced and fell into the water between the steamer and the pier. One of the pier operatives, Pat Shields, who has effected many previous rescues, immediately jumped in at the back of the paddle wing and brought him to the side of the pier where a ladder had been placed. Mr (Guy) sustained a bruise on the head from the paddle float which was in motion at the time, but it was not of a serious nature and after being attended to at a friend's home, he was able to leave by the Grenadier on her return journey in the afternoon. Shields got his face cut by the sharp edges of mussels adhering to the pier, but was otherwise uninjured.
